A panic attack is a rush of intense psychological and physical symptoms. These symptoms of panic can be frightening and happen suddenly, often for no clear reason. One cannot say when the attack is likely to occur. It can even strike when relaxing or sleeping.
Panic attacks can be as brief as 10 minutes or can last within 20 to 30 minutes, some of the symptoms may persist longer. A person may experience one or more panic attacks, yet be otherwise perfectly happy and healthy or the panic attacks may occur as part of another disorder, such as panic disorder, social phobia, or depression. It usually starts from having the first attack to having frequent episodes.
It is believed that people who have had an attack before have a greater risk of having subsequent attacks than people that have never experienced an attack before. When a person begins to experience repeat episodes, and there is fear of even more repetitions, that person is considered to have a condition known as panic disorder.
People having repeated panic attacks or panic disorder begin to live in fear and they become extremely anxious because they are unable to predict when the next attack is likely to occur. Although, recurrent panic attacks are often triggered by specific situations, such as being touched on the shoulder from behind, speaking in public or crossing a busy road – especially if the situation has caused a panic attack before, it is not clear what causes panic disorder.
Research has found some evidence that indicates that the tendency to develop panic attacks may run in some families. If allowed to continue, a person suffering from panic disorder may develop depression, alcohol or drugs abuse or even attempt suicide.
Fortunately, panic attack or panic disorder is a condition that can be treated by therapy, medication or the combination of both as the need may be.
